Meet Ace!

by Jeremiah on August 6th, 2008

Long Legged AceMeet Ace, the long, lean, leggy Miniature Schnauzer and one of the recently rescued “3 boys”.  Ace looks and smells good now, but from what I understand, he was in pretty bad shape when Pam picked him and his two amigos up.  By the time I got him, Ace was all nice and clean.

Ace is now living with me in Minneapolis along with my two other dogs, Joe the Miniature Schnauzer (another dog saved by MSPMSR.ORG that I adopted a little over a year ago) and my ancient Welsh Terrier Kirby, another dog I adopted from a different rescue group over 10 years ago.  Ace also lives with four parrots right now!  When my African Grey Charlie yells “Outside”, Ace runs to the back door thinking I’m calling him to let him out to go potty!

Ace Goes Shopping Ace is a very happy, active dog.  He has lots of energy and is very curious about everything around him.  He’s got a big, wet nose that he puts into everything!  Everything must be checked out and figured out by Ace!  He follows me everywhere I go in the house and manages to find something to get into.   He loves to chew on rawhide bones and play with both soft plush toys and rubber squeak toys.  Ace is learning that certain things are not toys, like my favorite pair of socks!

From what I understand,

Ace gets along well with my two other dogs.  Little Joe is!  Ace also has sniffed the next door neighbor’s puppy through the fence and has play-barked at him but he hasn’t met him face-to-face yet.  Ace loves to play with my dog Joe; he’s very gentle in his play and knows when to quit based on the signals Joe gives him.   He doesn’t bother my older dog Kirby at all; he respects Kirby and leaves him alone.  Ace knows his place in the pack and is happy with it.

Ace has shown no aggression toward me or any of the humans that he’s met since coming to live with me.  My boyfriend comes over often and Ace took to him right away.  Now Ace tries to show him with kisses; Ace is a kissy dog and will also goose the back of your legs with his cold, wet nose!

Ace has gone on a couple of walks with my boyfriend and me and does okay on a leash.  He doesn’t pull on the leash, straining himself.  Instead, he gets so excited by everything he sees and smells that he just tries to go in all directions at once!  Ace is out in the world now and he wants to make up for lost time!  He gets himself tangled up in the leash with those long legs of his!  But by taking walks with Joe, he seems to be learning by example and is getting better on each walk.

Ace is learning to accept being crated in a kennel for varying periods of time.  When I kennel him, I make sure he has water, chew toys, and if I’m going to be gone for more than a couple of hours, a Kong toy with dog food in it.  He’s only fed in his kennel as well so he learns to associate it with good things.

Ace is a very funny dog and would make a wonderful addition to a family that has the time it takes to take on a Miniature Schnauzer.  This breed of dog is smart, sassy, cute, curious, sometimes stubborn, but loyal to the ones they love to a fault and will steal your heart if you don’t watch out.  Ace is no exception to that rule, he’s won my heart over and I’m glad that I am able to foster him and help him learn to be a great pet for some lucky person out there!
